PDH Site Still Derelict As Talks Continue and Costs Mount

PAUL STAINTON: You’d like a bit of building to be done, wouldn’t you, on the PDH site in Peterborough that’s been derelict for who knows how long?
STEWART JACKSON: Well it’s been empty, that site, since December 2010. And given that the Trust, the Hospital Trust, has got an indicative deficit if they don’t make some pretty big changes, of £54 million, one would have thought that in the last twenty two months they would have got round to actually disposing of the site and start the process of building good quality homes there. Stewart Jackson on the Prospects for the Coalition Agreement

13:17 Monday 16th July 2012
World At One

MARTHA KEARNEY: What is the future of the Government? The Mayor of London Boris Johnson said this morning that the Coalition is, and I quote, “doomed to succeed”. Interesting phrase that. Stewart Jackson is the Conservative MP for Peterborough. He was one of those who voted against the Government on Lords Reform. Do you see a way through that thorny issue? Stewart Jackson on Lords Reform

17:18 Monday 9th July 2012
Drive BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

STEWART JACKSON: Well I am a reformer, and I do think that the present House of Lords is not entirely satisfactory. It’s got too many members, too many people that don’t attend. And certainly if we were starting with a blank sheet of paper, we wouldn’t have designed the upper chamber of the sixth biggest economy in the world in quite the way that it has been designed. But it’s an historical establishment. It’s full of people who have expertise, who’ve come from diverse backgrounds, who actually make a real contribution to refining and improving Bills. And these present proposals in my opinion are solely driven by the self-interest of Liberal Democrats. They don’t take into account the fact that different governments of all persuasions have tried for over a hundred years to reform the House of Lords. And most importantly there is not a consensus on this very radical constitutional reform.
CHRIS MANN: So are you prepared to vote against your own government on this? Continue reading “Stewart Jackson on Lords Reform”

A Message From Stewart Jackson To George Osborne – Cut Taxes

17:20 Friday 1st June 2012
Drive BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

CHRIS MANN: More bad news on the economy. We’re hearing again that figures are getting worse, not better.
STEWART JACKSON: Well I think Chris this is a function as Andrew Lansley said of many things, but principally it’s not a lack of cash, actually, because businesses do have cash. It is about confidence, business confidence to replace machinery, take on new people, build a new factory. And it’s about the European Single Currency, and people are waiting to see what happens. We could be on the precipice of a catastrophic ejection in terms of not only Greece, but Spain, from the Single European Currency. And that has a massive impact. And that’s obviously going to affect exporters. The strength of the pound of course means that people like Perkins Engines, Caterpillar in my own constituency, are suffering a bit of a downturn as a result of that.
CHRIS MANN: Well Andrew Lansley talked of course in detail about the benefits to South Cambridgeshire, particularly in I.T. and electronics down here. But what about in Peterborough? Continue reading “A Message From Stewart Jackson To George Osborne – Cut Taxes”

MP Rails Against Cost of Uncontrolled EU Migration

Drive BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

NICK FAIRBAIRN: The interpretation and translation services provided by Peterborough Crown Court and Peterborough Magistrates Court has almost doubled in the past five years. The cost has risen from £36,447 in 2006/7 to more than £75,000 in the last financial year. MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson told me earlier it is a big problem. (TAPE)
STEWART JACKSON: It shows that again Peterborough is suffering in terms of the impact without any Government assistance in terms of extra funding of uncontrolled European Union migration. Continue reading “MP Rails Against Cost of Uncontrolled EU Migration”

Whittlesea Rejects Peterborough South Plan

08:06 Tuesday 3rd April 2012
Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PAUL STAINTON: Residents in Whittlesea, Fletton and Woodston have voiced their concerns at proposals to change the boundaries to the constituencies that make up the UK. Today marks the end of a consultation on these proposals that would see the constituencies of Peterborough and North West Cambridgeshire replaced with Peterborough North, and Peterborough South, and the end of North East Cambridgeshire altogether. .. One area unhappy with the changes is Whittlesea. With North East Cambridgeshire being abolished, Whittlesea will join Peterborough South. But is it such bad news? Let’s speak to Mayor Mayor of Whittlesea. Good morning Mayor Mayor.
KAY MAYOR: Good morning Paul.
PAUL STAINTON: Can I call you Kay, to avoid ridiculousness?
KAY MAYOR: I would prefer that, thank you. (THEY LAUGH)
PAUL STAINTON: Now listen, smiling aside, joking aside, why is it such bad news for Whittlesea to be part of Peterborough South? Continue reading “Whittlesea Rejects Peterborough South Plan”

Government Changes Rules For Becoming a Brit

17:40 Monday 5th March 2012
Drive BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

CHRIS MANN: Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson has backed new Home Office rules which mean unskilled immigrants from outside the EU will no longer have an automatic right to settle in the UK. Until now, someone who had lived in the UK for five years was virtually guaranteed to be allowed to settle here permanently. Those who have settled in the past tend to be lower earners, more than those who have not. Now, in order to settle, workers must be paid at least £35,000. Stewart Jackson joined me earlier to give his reaction. Continue reading “Government Changes Rules For Becoming a Brit”

Stewart Jackson on DVLA, Royal Mail, and Jobs for Peterborough

17:08 Wednesday 22nd February 2012
Drive BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

CHRIS MANN: The Royal Mail have confirmed to us that they’re considering closing the Cambridge Sorting Office, where 196 people are based. They’ve begun a 6 month consultation, but the likelihood is the work will be switched to other centres, such as Peterborough, by 2014. Royal Mail have declined to appear on this programme, but have told us there will be no compulsory redundancies. .. Meanwhile in Peterborough, there is a fight to save the jobs at the DVLA. Stewart Jackson joins me now, live from our Millbank studios at Westminster. He’s the MP for Peterborough of course. Stewart, good evening.
STEWART JACKSON: Good evening Chris.
CHRIS MANN: The jobs there are threatened because the Department of Transport wants to close the DVLA. Now you’ve made a bid today to get Mike Penning. the Undersecretary of State, to change the consultation on this . Please explain to us.
