And In The Blue Corner

[C]HRIS MANN: While I’m talking to you, let me ask you about another issue. Labour have published a list of 106 hit seats they say they’ll be trying to win. Yours is on it. Are you worried?
STEWART JACKSON: Do I sound worried Chris? (BEAT) Really, I understand the game. This is politics. They want to talk up their chances. But until they can put together a credible programme for government, including tax and spend, and until they’ve apologised for the debt millstone they bequeathed to the Coalition Government, they’re not going to be taken really seriously by the electorate. I’ve got a strong record, and will have, of ten years working as the local MP in Peterborough, not beholden to anyone, speaking my mind, as a proud Conservative but thinking for myself. And on that basis I think it will be close, but I’m not unduly worries. But good luck to the Labour Party.
CHRIS MANN: You say “as a proud Conservative.” But increasingly you’re a Conservative rebel. Is the stance you’re taking on certain things like Europe, is that key to you keeping the seat?
STEWART JACKSON: Well I think I’m in touch with the views of people in my constituency, on things like immigration, on crime, on Europe, on welfare. And sometimes you do have to speak the truth to power, and make yourself unpopular if you think you’re doing it for a principled .. and for the right reasons. And for those reasons in particular, I feel that people respect you for speaking your mind and being who you are, rather than just being another Identikit cut-out and keep politician, which I think people are fed up with.

Peterborough Renewables – Leaked Email Points To Planning Panic Over Tariff Deadline

[P]AUL STAINTON: There’s confusion this morning surrounding the consultation on plans to build solar panels on 900 acres of farmland near Peterborough, with claims that key documents are remaining undisclosed, and consultation dates are being changed. Around a dozen tenant farmers look to be affected, with some fearing they’ll lose their homes, but the City Council say they’re needed to make Peterborough energy self-sufficient. The public consultation into the plans closes on 1st February, but BBC Radio Cambridgeshire has seen a leaked email asking authorities and environmental bodies to give their views ahead of that deadline. It’s led local councillors and campaigners to believe the decision process is being rushed through, and isn’t fair and balanced. Tory UKIP Pact?

[S]TEWART JACKSON CONSERVATIVE MP: I’ve said directly to David Cameron and others that as a party, at the very least we need to have an in/out referendum, to give the people their voice, a voice they’ve not had for over 30 years, so that we do pay due attention to their views, and we do represent their views. And if it’s the people’s will that we remain part of the European Union, I will accept that. But let’s give the voice. And I will campaign for us to leave the European Union, to restore sovereignty and outright self-government. I should be working with UKIP to get that in/out referendum, rather than them .. this futile gesture of standing against someone like me who’s a Eurosceptic, helping the Labour Party, which is, as I say, madness.
CHRIS MANN: Working together, Lisa Duffy?
LISA DUFFY UKIP NATIONAL CAMPAIGN MANAGER: I would happily work with Stewart on an in/out referendum. Unfortunately I don’t believe Cameron will ever give us one, but I would certainly work cross party in getting that in/out referendum, and letting the people decide on our membership of the European Union. Definitely.

Peter Reading On The Financial Crisis At The Peterborough City Hospital

PAUL STAINTON: A local MP and member of the Public Accounts Committee has revealed that theatres at Peterborough City Hospital could close,  as the Trust running the hospital continues to struggle with debt. The Hospital, which has been open for two years of course, was funded by that expensive PFI agreement, and has seen the Trust rack up over £50 million of debt, £1 million a month. Now, speaking to us earlier, MP for North East Cambridgeshire Stephen Barclay described the way the new hospital was funded and then managed as “disgraceful and shocking”. (TAPE)
STEPHEN BARCLAY: Well it was quite disgraceful, and it raises serious questions over the performance of senior managers in the NHS, many of whom are paid significant salaries, and their performance has been quite shocking. (LIVE)
PAUL STAINTON: Well the Trust has had to receive bailout money from the Government in order to stay open, and as Mr Barclay revealed earlier, the Hospital may have to close theatres just to stay afloat. Continue reading “Peter Reading On The Financial Crisis At The Peterborough City Hospital”

The Disastrous Consequences of Private Sector Involvement in the NHS

PAUL STAINTON: It’s a big day for the chief executives from two Cambridgeshire hospitals. They’re going to face questions from MPs at a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee. The politicians will be focusing on the finances of Peterborough City and Hinchinbrooke Hospitals. Earlier we heard from Karen Webb, the Regional Director of the Royal College of Nursing. She says she feels sorry for staff and patients at Peterborough City Hospital, which has debts higher than nearly any other on the whole of the NHS. (TAPE)
KAREN WEBB: The issues are very worrying for the people of Cambridgeshire, because ultimately unless the Government makes some higher political decisions about bailing out all of these private finance initiatives around the country, unless Government takes that decision, the only way forward is going to be to lose staff and cut services, neither of which is in the interests of the people of Cambridgeshire. (LIVE)
PAUL STAINTON: Well earlier this year Hinchinbrooke Hospital was taken over by a private company of course called Circle, an idea designed to get the hospital better managed and out of debt. Karen doesn’t think that’s working. Well we can speak to the Conservative MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson, who’s going to be on that Public Accounts Committee today. Morning Stewart.
STEWART JACKSON: Good morning Paul.
PAUL STAINTON: What are you trying to find out here? Why have you called these two guys in? Continue reading “The Disastrous Consequences of Private Sector Involvement in the NHS”

Tories Split On Europe

MARTHA KEARNEY: The Leader of UKIP Nigel Farage described David Cameron as the major obstacle to any kind of discussion or deal with UKIP. Speaking on the Daily Politics on BBC2 earlier, Nigel Farage said a pact would only be possible with a change of Leader. (TAPE)
NIGEL FARAGE: If Cameron went and somebody pragmatic, grown-up and sensible like Michael Gove was Leader, you might think then we could sit round the table and have a proper discussion. Continue reading “Tories Split On Europe”

Richard Howitt and Stewart Jackson on Immigration and the EU Budget

PAUL STAINTON: Last night David Cameron got something of a bloody nose in the House of Commons. He was defeated in a vote over Europe. MPs voted by a majority of 13 in favour of a rebel Tory call for a cut in the European budget .. Let’s speak to the MEP for the Eastern Region, Labour’s Richard Howitt .. There’s a perception though isn’t there that it’s just a massive gravy train, and that you know there’s expenses here and there, there’s people earning absolute fortunes for not doing very much at all.
RICHARD HOWITT: Well those feelings are because that type of language is used in the media.
PAUL STAINTON: So it’s the media’s fault, is it? Continue reading “Richard Howitt and Stewart Jackson on Immigration and the EU Budget”
