PAUL STAINTON: The long hoped for North Westgate development, remember that? David Shaw is one of the men behind it, planning adviser to Hawksworth, who’ve been trying to get this North Westgate development sorted for, how long David?
DAVID SHAW: Ooh, a very long time. Eighteen years. I really am beginning to get a little old, I think.
PAUL STAINTON: I was going to say, you must have been a boy in short trousers when it started.
DAVID SHAW: I was nearly. I’ve been trying to get things to happen in the city centre for nearly thirty eight years. Queensgate did succeed, but with North Westgate we’re not having any success. Continue reading “North Westgate – Time to Get On With It”

Peterborough Pwned

08:18 Thursday 9th February 2012
Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PAUL STAINTON: The debate on the proposed rise in council tax in Peterborough continues to rage. Government Minister Bob Neill has urged the people of this city to lobby the Council over plans to raise council tax by nearly 3%, rather than accept a Government grant which would avoid such a rise. Mr. Neill joins Eric Pickles, the Taxpayers Alliance and MP Stewart Jackson in condemning the proposal from the Council. It’s a topic that’s splitting the Tories nationally .. and locally? Well, here’s Marco Cereste, Leader of Peterborough City Council. Morning sir.
MARCO CERESTE: Hello Paul. How are you.
PAUL STAINTON: I’m alright. Have you got another revolt on your hands here? Continue reading “Peterborough Pwned”

MP Jackson Wins Extra Cash for Peterborough Schools

17:12 Monday 16th January 2012
Drive BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

CHRIS MANN: As you’ve just heard in the news, it looks like schools in Peterborough will be given money to help with the growing number of pupils who don’t have English as the first language. The city and its surrounding areas has become a mecca for many Pakistani families, and a growing number of Eastern European families, looking to settle down. It’s made the city one of the most multi-cultural in East Anglia, but has led to pressures in the classroom, with many teachers unavailable to offer extra help to children. So, how badly is this money required? Well joining me now is John Holdich, the Cabinet Member for Schools at Peterborough City Council. John, good evening to you.
JOHN HOLDICH: Good evening.
CHRIS MANN: So this is something you’ve been asking for for a while. Continue reading “MP Jackson Wins Extra Cash for Peterborough Schools”

Stewart Jackson on Europe

07:13 Tuesday 13rd December 2011
Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridge

PAUL STAINTON: Have you seen Nick Clegg?
STEWART JACKSON: No. I did see a rather unflattering picture of him in his shorts yesterday in the London Evening Standard, which quite put me off my tea.
PAUL STAINTON: Yes. That was a bit odd yesterday, not turning up in the House of Commons, wasn’t it?
STEWART JACKSON: Well it was a bit ridiculous. I think he should have sat down next to the Prime Minister and kept a stiff upper lip, and kept his chin out, and just taken the brickbats. But that’s for Nick Clegg to make a decision on. Obviously I wouldn’t have done it. I think it’s a bit of a PR mistake, not to turn up to a very important statement by the Prime Minister. But I sadly am not responsible for Nick Clegg’s actions. Continue reading “Stewart Jackson on Europe”

Stewart Jackson MP on Thomas Cook

07:22 Monday 28th November 2011
Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PAUL STAINTON: Peterborough-based travel company Thomas Cook could axe 1000 jobs in a radical restructuring. It’s after the banks threw it a £200 million lifeline. It sells more than 22 million holidays in the UK every year, but bookings have dropped, partly due to the unrest in popular destinations like Tunisia and Egypt. Let’s speak to MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson, who’s with us this morning. Morning Stewart.
STEWART JACKSON: Good morning Paul.
PAUL STAINTON: First of all I suppose we’ve got to say thank the Lord we can still not just book it, we can Thomas Cook it. That’s the good thing. Continue reading “Stewart Jackson MP on Thomas Cook”

Jackson Blames Labour for Border Agency Blunder

Qe’re looking at a background in the last ten years of one-legged Romanian roofers, and prisoners failing to be deported and everything else. That Department is a mess. I deal, every single day, with the UK’s Borders Agency, and it’s pretty dysfunctional, as you can imagine.

BBC Radio Cambridgeshire:

PAUL STAINTON: Stewart, before I let you go, I’ve got to ask you about Theresa May, and this story yesterday. How many people did we let in? Do we know? Will we ever know?
STEWART JACKSON: Well I think the inquiry is ongoing Paul. Obviously it’s very disappointing. Having said that, I think she did acquit herself quite well in the House of Commons.
PAUL STAINTON: Strong on immigration though. This happened on your Government’s watch.
STEWART JACKSON: Yes, and I accept that that’s the case, and she must take reponsibility for it. Having said that, we did inherit an appalling position from the previous Government in terms of immigration, essentially an open-door policy.
PAUL STAINTON: They didn’t let people walk in without getting their passports checked though, did they?
STEWART JACKSON: No, and I accept that. But then again, you know we’re looking at a background in the last ten years of one-legged Romanian roofers, and prisoners failing to be deported and everything else. That Department is a mess. I deal, every single day, with the UK’s Borders Agency, and it’s pretty dysfunctional, as you can imagine.
PAUL STAINTON: Are we getting it sorted then, very quickly?
STEWART JACKSON: Well if it’s anything to do with me we will, because if we don’t deal with immigration as a Government, then we won’t deserve to get re-elected.
PAUL STAINTON: Thank you for that Stewart. Boom boom.

Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PAUL STAINTON: He’s a rebel. (MUSIC – REBEL REBEL DAVID BOWIE) He’s a rebel. MP for Peterborough Stewart Jackson has threatened to resign as a Ministerial Aide if MPs are ordered to vote against proposals for a referendum on leaving the European Union. Downing Street says it expects Conservative MPs to vote against the proposals on Monday, but Stewart Jackson says he will rebel. He owes it to his constituents to support a referendum. Morning rebel.
STEWART JACKSON: Morning Paul.
PAUL STAINTON: How are you doing? Alright?
STEWART JACKSON: That’s not strictly correct. I haven’t threatened to resign. I’ve actually said I am going to vote for the motion, and therefore I expect to be sacked. Continue reading “Peterborough MP to Defy Whip on EU Referendum”

The PDH Site Sale Saga Continues ..

07:21 Monday 19th September 2011
Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PAUL STAINTON: There are reports that a multi-million pound bid to buy the site of the empty PDH has been rejected, and that the land will now be put onto the open property market. The Trust was criticised by Peterborough’s MP Stewart Jackson for not putting the site on the open market in the first place, and Stewart’s with us this morning. Morning Stew.
STEWART JACKSON: Good morning Paul.
PAUL STAINTON: Most people would have been surprised that it wasn’t put out on the open market originally. You were very surprised and shocked, considering they need all the money they can get. Continue reading “The PDH Site Sale Saga Continues ..”
