Tesco Shelford Battle Commenced

ANDY HARPER: Residents of the village of Shelford were up in arms after it was revealed on this programme that Tesco plan to open in the village. Many thought it would decimate the small independent shops there, which do so well. Yesterday four planning applications to convert the former Eden Lilly store were refused by South Cambridgeshire District Council. Fenland Fuel Thefts

ANDY HARPER: Now on our Cambridge Breakfast Programme this morning you will have heard once again stories about the theft of central heating fuel. It was rife before Christmas, when it was rocketing in price, and also of course very difficult to get hold of. I have to say that suddenly it has become very available. Our syndicate put in last Thursday for some, and by Monday it had been delivered. Sio not much of a shortage there, I think it’s fair to say, but the price, well, that’s another matter. Well as we say, there are quite a few incidents of the theft of this stuff from people’s properties, and our reporter Johnnie Dee has been out looking for somebody who maybe has suffered. The Government has approved the Council’s vision of 25,500 homes, and 24,600 new jobs in the city by 2026. It includes the proposed 5,000 home development at Great Haddon, and makes provision for the Magna Park rail freight exchange plan for Stanground. Recycling Old Paint

CAROL CARMAN: A new scheme has been started up in Cambridgeshire. Now this is recycling paint, but that’s nothing new. Across the country paint has been recycled The new element to this is that the cans whether plastic or tin can then go on and be recycled, which is saving an awful lot of paint cans from going into landfill. With the recycling of the paint the community groups benefit, and with the recycling of the cans, the environment benefits. I went along yesterday to Milton Recycling Centre. Peterborough Hospital Aftercare Neglect Claims

PAUL STAINTON: A Peterborough councillor has slammed health care officials over the quality of aftercare given to some patients in this city. Charles Swift who represents the North Ward was contacted by residents who say they’ve not been given a proper care plan. And Gary Johnson, who left Peterborough United last night, has told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire that he was disappointed to have gone. Johnson had just nine months in charge at London Road. The Club has said he left after he and Chairman Darragh McAnthony could not see eye to eye on policy. I spoke to Johnson earlier, and he said that there were a few people he wanted to pay tribute to.
