John Bridge on the Co-op Depot Closure

ANDY BURROWS: Let’s return to our top story this afternoon, and it’s the grim news that 230 jobs at the Co-op distribution centre in Peterborough are under threat. The company in Ivatt Way Westwood says efforts will be made to redeploy staff. The company has sites in Huntingdon, Godmanchester, and plans for a new base in Hampshire. But the firm has said it is likely there will be redundancies. John Bridge is from the Peterborough and Camnbridgeshire Chambers of Commerce. Evening to you John.

Co-op Peterborough Depot to Close

ANDY BURROWS: We start today with some pretty grim news for staff at the Co-op distribution centre in Peterborough. 230 jobs are under threat, after the company announced its depot in Ivatt Way in Westwood will shut in the Autumn. The firm has said the move is being made after a company review. It said efforts will be made to redeploy staff. The company has sites in Huntingdon and Godmanchester, and plans for a new base in Hampshire. But it is likely there will be redundancies in Peterborough. Eric Pickles on Localism for Peterborough

Eric Pickles MP Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government will be launching the Government’s Localism Bill today, which aims to devolve various powers down to local level. The BBC’s Paul Stainton asks Mr Pickles exactly how that might work in Peterborough, where Neighbourhood Councils have received a less than warm welcome and bank funding for new enterprises is practically non-existent.

Changes at New Link

New Link Peterborough is a groundbreaking service that provides guidance and advice to new arrivals in the city, who may not be familiar with the language and culture. Changes in the service now mean that instead of being office-based they will become peripatetic, with four out-reach workers travelling around offering the service at different venues in the city.

Resistance is mounting to what residents see as rapacious development, and Dale McKean reports back from the latest public meeting.
