Lord de Ramsey will Rebuild the Three Horseshoes Inn

A report from the scene of a major fire at the Three Horseshoes Pub in Abbots Ripton is followed by a telephone interview with Lord de Ramsey, upon whose land is stands. Paul Stainton and Janine Machin are the interviewer and reporter. This was broadcast at 07:20 on 24th March 2010 in the Paul Stainto Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Peterborough.

PS: We’re waking up to fire damage to an iconic building in Cambridgeshire this morning. The damage is being assessed at the Three Horseshoes pub in Abbots Ripton close to Huntingdon. The thatched roof of the seventeenth century Grade II listed building set light yesterday afternoon. At it’s height, there were six fire engines and one turntable ladder at the scene. No-one was hurt. BBC Look East’s Janine Machin reports: (TAPE)
JM: It has stood in the village of Abbots Ripton for more than three hundred years, but it’ll be some time before The Three Horseshoes Inn can welcome customers again. Two passers-by raised the alarm at around four o’clock yesterday afternoon.

Lincoln Road: Crown Pub to be Members Club

It’s 07:25 on Tuesday 23rd March 2010, and Paul Stainton is talking to Brian Gascoyne, Chairman of the Millfield and New England Regeneration Partnership, about the news that Brian is reopening the Crown Pub Lincoln Road Peterborough as a Members Only club.

PS: Now the Crown Pub in New England is to reopen this week as a private members community club. For anybody who’s ever done the Crown to Town, going back many years, it’s not been possible in recent weeks. It’s had a chequered past of course. It was closed earlier this year following a number of altercations at the establishment. One man, though, believes he can change it all. He’s Brian Gascoyne. Good morning Brian.

It’s 07:50 on Tuesday 23rd March, and Michael van Straten is calling in from the comfort of his villa in France to answer those niggling health questions that Kerry Devine is taking from the staff at the Alliance & Leicester Building Society on Church Street in Peterborough.

PS: We’ve been out and about again Michael to find out how well, or ill, the people of Peterborough are. We sent Miss Kerry Devine out to the Alliance & Leicester Building Society in Peterborough, to find out what health problems are bothering the staff there. I’m afraid it’s more pins and needles.

Nick Sandford: Outsourcing Culture Sport and Heritage

This interview with Peterborough City Councillor and Liberal Democrat Prospective Parliamentary Candidate Nick Sandford takes place following the news that Peterborough City Council intend to hand responsibility for libraries, museums, sports facilities and the Key Theatre over to a charitable trust. Broadcast at 07:10 on Monday 22nd March 2010 in Paul Stainton’s BBC Peterborough Breakfast Show.

PS: Now, the city’s libraries, museum, sports facilities and the Key Theatre may no longer be managed by the City Council. A new charitable trust could take over the running of it in order to save the Council some cash. Let’s speak to LibDem Parliamentary Candidate Nick Sandford. Morning Nick.
NS: Good morning.
PS: Sounds like a good idea.
NS: Well it’s a good idea that it might save a small amount of cash I think. In the first year it will cost the Council money with all the setup costs. But they reckon it may save up to a couple of hundred thousand. I think the major concerns that we’ve got about it are there’s going to be a significant loss of democracy and accountability. The type of trust they’ve chosen, once the trustees have been appointed they can just reappoint themselves virtually in perpetuity. And I think that leaves a number of concerns about, for instance, the Council will lose control of charges. I remember a couple of years ago there was concern that sports charges were going up over the rate of inflation. When that happened, people could go to the local councillors. When the trust has control of it people will basically have no actual say.

Matthew Lee: Outsourcing Culture Sport and Heritage

This interview with Peterborough City Council’s Cabinet Member for Environment Capital and Culture Matthew Lee takes place following the news that Peterborough City Council intend to hand responsibility for libraries, museums, sports facilities and the Key Theatre over to a charitable trust. PS: Can you understand Nick Sandford’s reservations?
ML: Yes but they’re not true. I’ve tried to correct him and unfortunately he doesn’t seem to want to listen. Can I just reassure everybody the trustees can’t just keep reappointing themselves. They’ll be time-limited. Two of the trustees will be councillors, and they’ll be appointed by the Leader of the Council. And this is deliberate, because some charities, when you see them with their trustees, over the years the trustees don’t change, and therefore the organisation doesn’t change, so it’s very important that this trust will be bringing in new blood over the years to reinvigorate the service.

Posh Fans Walk for Charity

This interview with Peterborough United FC fan and Free Kicks Foundation spokesman Steve Thorpe takes place on the road as fans walk from Peterborough to The Nottingham Forest ground in aid of the Free Kicks Foundation charity. Broadcast at 08:25 on Friday 19th March 2010 in Paul Stainton’s BBC Peterborough Breakfast Show.

PS: Now as we mentioned earlier, POSH travel to Nottingham Forest tomorrow hoping for another victory. Hopefully keep those slim safety dreams alive. Some fans though, set off yesterday morning, a group of them walking as we mentioned yesterday, to raise money for the Free Kicks charity. They set off from London Road around eleven, we had an update, I got a text about five o’clock saying they were in Empingham, and I believe they stayed overnight at Barnsdale Lodge. PS: You’ve lost the POSH mascot though, haven’t you? The rabbit’s gone somewhere.
ST: Yes, he bowed out around Burghley House. He had feet full of blisters, so he had to retire. He got myxomatosis I think.

Britaly Travel: Coping with the BA Strike

This interview with Daniel Broccoli from Britaly Travel London Road Peterborough followed the news that a BA cabin crew strike could lead to travel disruption. It was broadcast at 07:35 on Friday 19th March 2010 in Paul Stainton’s BBC Peterborough Breakfast Show.

PS: British Airways managers and unions have been talking. They will resume those talks today to try to avert this three day strike by the airline’s cabin crew. The two sides spent all day yesterday in discussions, but again they ended in deadlock. BA says it will be able to fly around 65% of passengers despite the walkout. The airline claims up to a thousand staff have offered to stand in for the strikers. But the UNITE union accuses the management of bluffing. But what does it mean for you, I, or anyone else who’s lucky enough to be going away this weekend? Daniel Broccoli is from Britaly Travel based on London Road in Peterborough. Good morning Daniel.
