UKIP have never looked the happiest bunch, let’s be honest. But members of the party in Peterborough have taken to wearing black for their election campaigns. PS: Now as Steve just said Gordon Brown launches Labour’s manifesto this morning. The BBC has learned that Labour will promise not to increase income tax rates if it wins the election. Gordon Brown will make the pledge when he unveils Labour’s manifesto later today, but he won’t pledge not to raise VAT. Conservative Leader David Cameron says Labour haven’t any new ideas. (TAPE)
DC: What you’re going to see from the Conservative manifesto is a clear recognition that real change isn’t just Government producing manifestos, but recognising we’re all in this together. But I think there’s a contrast in this campaign frankly, no new ideas from Labour, very negative campaign, all about attack and trying to scare people, and very positive agenda-setting ideas from the Conservatives. PS: Well Liberal Democrat Leader Nick Clegg says Labour won’t be taken seriously unless they say how they’d save money as well as spend it. (TAPE)
NC: Clearly money is tight. So clearly all political parties, if they’re going to be credible, and trusted by the British people, in the run-up to the election, have got to make promises which are always fully costed. (LIVE)

Ed Murphy on Overdevelopment in Eye and Thorney

Labour Parliamentary Candidate Ed Murphy talks about controversial plans to build seven hundred new homes in Eye and Thorney villages. Broadcast at 08:35 on Wednesday 31st March 2010 in the Paul Stainton Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Peterborough.

PS: Villagers in Eye are very worried about plans for hundreds of new houses which could have a devastating impact on their community. Darren Fower on the NHS Peterborough Deficit

Darren Fower LibDem councillor reports back from the emergency meeting of the Peterborough City Council Scrutiny Commission for Health Services to discuss the current NHS Peterborough deficit and projected cuts of £27 million. PS: Now how does a Primary Care Trust overspend by nearly twelve million quid? Well we’ve tried to find out over the last few weeks. But that’s what Peterborough’s Liberal Democrats asked at yesterday’s emergency health scrutiny meeting at the Town Hall. They want answers following NHS Peterborough’s staggering overspend on last year’s budget. Last week we spoke to Chairman of the Board councillor Marco Cereste and we asked him if he was happy with his performance as Chairman. Of course he said he wasn’t happy, and we asked him as well if he could .. if he would like to consider his future as Chairman of the Board, and he said he would be considering that future. Darren Fower is Leader of Peterborough LibDems, and he called for the meeting and joins us on the phone now. Morning Darren.
DF: Good Morning Paul.
PS: You heard what Marco had to say on the phone last week. Obviously he wasn’t happy with his own performance. In fact, we can remind you of what Marco had to say. (TAPE)
MC: No I’m not happy with the job that I’ve done as NHS Peterborough. I am terribly disappointed that after twenty five years of virtually perfect perfect service to this city, we’ve had a situation where we just .. you know .. the forecasting in what the costs of health care would be in the city was so .. got so terribly wrong. (LIVE)
PS: Yes. So he was unhappy with his performance, you were unhappy with his and the PCT’s performance, and that’s why you called the meeting last night.
DF: Absolutely. The bottom line is everything has to come to an end, and while there may have been previous years where Mr Cereste and the Board have done well, right now it’s quite the opposite, it really is.

Marco Cereste on the NHS Peterborough Deficit

Marco Cereste Chair of NHS Peterborough comments on the crticisms levelled at him following the announcement that this year NHS Peterborough overspent by a far greater amount than expected, and that next year it will need to reduce its spending by tens of millions of pounds to balance the books.
