Stewart Jackson MP on Opportunity Peterborough

This is part of a longer interview where Stewart Jackson Conservative MP celebrates his re-election as MP for Peterborough. Broadcast at 08:10 on Monday 10th May 2010 in the Paul Stainton Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Peterborough.

STAINTON: We’ve got a text in saying: Ask Stewart about North Westgate please, and developments like that. What can he do to ensure we get Peterborough going, and get it developed?
JACKSON: Well one of the big things that we haven’t done, and a big failure, and I have to say I lay it at the door of Opportunity Peterborough, because it’s no-one else’s fault. We have not sold Peterborough on the national stage as robustly as we should. We haven’t had ads on the sides of taxis, ads in the Financial Times, radio ads, nationally. We need to get really serious about businesses coming to this city, and say Peterborough is a fantastic place to live, work and do business. And I think we’ve failed in that. Because we’ve got so many advantages. We’ve got a new University Centre, we’ve got a beautiful city centre that’s coming together, we’ve got possibly a new Station Quarter, we’re an Environment City. And we’ve got great transport links. We need to be banging the drum constantly. And if we don’t do that, we are going to lose out to the Cambridges, Milton Keynes, Leicesters and other places. And that means we won’t get the jobs we desperately need in this city.

John Bridge on Immigration

John Bridge, Chairman of Opportunity Peterborough, comments on recent media stories about immigration issues in Peterborough. Broadcast at 07:10 on Wednesday 14th April 2010 in the Paul Stainton Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Peterborough.

STAINTON: The Chairman of Opportunity Peterborough has criticised two city councillors for expressing their concern about the effect of immigration in Peterborough. You may have seen the stories in the newspapers at the weekend. Independent councillors Charlie Swift and Keith Sharp wrote to the leaders of the three main parties to tell them about the effect of EU migration in the North Ward. We covered the story way back in January, but it’s just featured in a range of national newspapers in recent days. Councillor Swift spoke to Radio Cambridgeshire yesterday. (TAPE)
SWIFT: Well I told them in no uncertain manner how my ward .. I’ve represented this ward for fifty six years, I’m very proud of the fact .. but I’ve seen it, not only this area but the areas adjacent to us, deteriorate. We’re waiting now, we’ve got about forty or fifty vacancies at the school round the corner, no places for children to go. We’re having to reopen schools that were closed only a few years ago because they said we haven’t got enough pupils. And I don’t think they realise that at the same time they’re talking about making drastic cuts in public expenditure, that it’s just not on. Because we’ve got all these extra pressures that are coming in. And there’s nothing racialist about it, they do not realise the effect at this present time, that all these extra bodies that we’ve got, on the health service, is creating. This interview with Trevor Gibson from Opportunity Peterborough talks about their pilot project to map local environmental data to Google Earth as part of the IBM Smarter Cities project . Broadcast at 08:35 on Wednesday 17th March 2010 in Paul Stainton’s BBC Peterborough Breakfast Show.

PS: A new project which will monitor the carbon footprint of residents and businesses like you, me, him and her across the city has been launched. Opportunity Peterborough has teamed up with IBM to produce a website which will show energy and water usage along with recycling rates for wards across the city. It looks pretty impresive actually. There’s a picture in a local magazine this morning. It’s a first for the UK, and the dream is that it will turn Peterborough into the country’s leading sustainable city. Trevor Gibson is from Opportunity Peterborough. Good morning Trevor.
TG: Good morning.
PS: I like the look of this. It looks pretty good. It’s very pretty indeed. Does it cost us anything, first of all.
TG: Well it’s initially a partnership between Peterborough City Council and Opportunity Peterborough, paid for, a relatively small pilot actually, and IBM and Green Ventures, and Royal Haskoning have come on board and formed a sort of an association of consultancies, if you like, to work on something that we think will be really dramatic for the city, and is already being taken an interest in by many organisations outside of the UK.
PS: Yes. Can you explain what it is exactly, in layman’s terms?
