PAUL: Let’s start with the big story this morning though. What is the future of the Cresset Theatre in Peterborough? Just a few weeks ago it was announced all shows would end in June. But the Bretton venue’s website is still advertising comedy nights and music acts appearing as late as November. In the next hour we’ll speak to Jonathan Martin Chief Executive of the YMCA which operates the Cresset. First though let’s speak to Andy Jardine who lives in Wansford and is one of a number of people who started campaigns to keep the theatre open. In fact, we had a look round at all the people that are doing this and starting campaigns, and we spoke to a lady, there’s about eight thousand people joined various things. Andy, good morning.
ANDY: Good morning Paul.
PAUL: You’ve started an internet campaign, haven’t you? Continue reading “Save The Cresset Theatre Campaign”

Local promoter Steve Jason comments on the “poor relation” status of Peterborough venues, following the news that The Cresset Theatre will close. Broadcast at 08:10 on Monday 26th April 2010 in the Paul Stainton Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Peterborough.

PAUL: Now on the show this morning we have been focusing on the lack of night-life in Peterborough following the news that the Cresset Theatre is to close by the first of July, well to acts anyway. The Broadway Theatre of course closed fifteen months ago. Peterborough now just has one recognisable theatre, and that’s the Key. So will we, as a city, still be able to attract the country’s top performers? Or will entertainment and culture in Peterborough suffer from the lack of a quality venue? I suggested that to Council Leader Marco Cereste last week, that we might become the poor relation of Cambridge and Leicester and places like that, and he was quite angry about it. But that’s my opinion. Let’s find out from a man who should know. Steve Jason has been a promoter in Peterborough for many years, one of the few people in the city still putting things on. Steve, morning.
STEVE: Good morning.
PAUL: Both wearing cheesecloth this morning. Very nice. (laughs) Complement each other beautifully. Surely I made a fair point last week, didn’t I? Without the Cresset we’re a poor relation, aren’t we? We can’t see the top acts here. We can’t see the middling acts here anymore can we? Continue reading “Steve Jason on Peterborough Venues”

Marco Cereste on The Cresset

Marco Cereste Leader of Peterborough City Council comments on the local facilities remaining on offer in Peterborough in the leisure sector following the news that the Cresset Theatre in Bretton will close.

STAINTON: As we revealed this morning. the Cresset Theatre is to close by the end of June. The decision has been taken because of a cash crisis at the venue. The complex will remain open for weddings and conferences, but will not host concerts or gigs from July. Jonathan Martin is the Chief Executive of YMCA Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, which runs the complex. He assured ticket-holders for shows beyond June they will get their money back.
MARTIN: (TAPE) They will get their money back. And in fact it will start to happen automatically. For people who paid on debit and credit cards the money will just start appearing. We will send letters out to people saying it’s coming. For those that paid by cheque, they’ll receive a cheque in the post. The only people that need to come into the building to see us is the people that paid with cash need to bring their tickets in and we’ll give them their cash back.
STAINTON: (LIVE) Well joining us now is Marco Cereste Leader of Peterborough City Council, and editor of ESP Magazine, Sharon McAllister. We’ll talk to Sharon in a moment. First Marco. Marco morning. Your reaction to this news? Continue reading “Marco Cereste on The Cresset”

Sharon McAllister from ESP Magazine comments on the local facilities remaining on offer in Peterborough in the leisure sector following the news that the Cresset Theatre in Bretton will close.

PAUL: Let’s talk more about the Cresset then. we’ve heard from Marco Cereste and his views on the Cresset and where it leaves the nightlife in Peterborough. Let’s talk to somebody who knows all about the nightlife in Peterborough, Sharon McAllister from ESP Magazine, Peterborough’s number one entertainment magazine. Morning Sharon.
SHARON: Good morning Paul.
PAUL: Despite what Marco was saying, I think I’m one hundred per cent right. When I was around the city nightlife scene some fifteen twenty years ago, it was very vibrant. There were lots of places to go. It’s contracting, isn’t it? Continue reading “Sharon McAllister on The Cresset”
