The Moyes End Updated – Tangled Up in Blue

Need to Know on this Story is that Marco Cereste is the Leader of Peterborough City Council which decided to buy the Peterborough United stadium, and also the Chairman of the company that sponsors the POSH shirts. So you might say he treads a fine line when it comes to handing out Council favours.

ANDY BURROWS: Can we talk about the ground? Because the Moyes End is due to be redeveloped this season, isn’t it? Will that be out of action for the entire season?
DARRAGH MCANTHONY: So far as I’m hearing yes. They start doing it I think in October, so we are going to lose most of the season. I can’t have a go at the Council because at the end of the day they’re going to build us a fit-for-purpose new stand. Onbiously we’re concerned, because we’re going to lose probably well over a million pounds with that stand being out of action. So we are negotiating at the moment. I’ve asked them for a .. obviously to pay no rent, and a contribution towards our season. So we’ll see where that gets us. We’re still negotiating, even though the season’s going to start in eight weeks time.

PAUL STAINTON: We’re talking to Council Leader Marco Cereste. Earlier Marco we were talking to Darragh McAnthony about London Road, and discussing the development of the Moyes End. He was saying he’s in discussions with you because it’s going to cost the Club about £1 million to close Moyes End for all of next season, and he was looking for rent reduction, or free rent for next season. What’s the latest on those negotiations? Continue reading “The Moyes End Updated – Tangled Up in Blue”

Transformation with V4 Services and Verto in Peterborough

Many will remember that the subject of consultants has been rumbling on here, ever since Cllr Mike Fletcher asked some difficult questions back in January 2010 and later. If this means nothing to you, and you’d like to find out more, here is as good a place as any to start.

If you’d rather have a quick summary, here it is. Peterborough City Council have spent many millions per year on consultants, in order to achieve claimed savings of many more millions. Others dispute the benefits. What follows is one person’s interpretation of the situation.

Use of Consultants – Council Statement

08:35 Friday 25th March 2011
Peterborough Breakfast Show BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

ANDY GALL: Yesterday we brought you the outcome of the inquiry into whether Peterborough City Council is spending too much money on consultants. The three-man panel made 31 recommendations to the Scrutiny Committee, and called for the process of hiring consultants to be made more transparent. PCC couldn’t put someone up to talk to us, because the report will be discussed at a Cabinet meeting in June, but they did send a statement.

VO: “Peterborough City Council has some of the best controls in the country for managing and monitoring its use of consultants. We are already implementing many of the recommendations in the report as part of our drive for greater transparency, and ensuring we are always providing the best value for money for our taxpayers. Over the past 4 years we’ve been able to take £68 million out of our budget because of this work. We’d like to thank the consultants who’ve worked for us in the past, and those who continue to work for us, for sharing their expertise with our staff to enable us to improve the skills and knowledge we have within our own workforce.”

ANDY GALL: And in today’s Evening Telegraph you can get Council Leader Marco Cereste’s thoughts and comments on the report.

PAUL STAINTON: In yesterday’s show we were speaking to the Leader of Peterborough City Council, Marco Cereste, after he made changes to his Cabinet at the Council. One of the changes involved Councillor Cereste taking on extra portfolios regarding business engagement, taking over from Councillor Gavin Elsey. Here’s what Mr. Cereste had to say, as he explained his thinking behind the move. (TAPE) “I’ve brought all the business bits and pieces under my portfolio. So now any businessman, any business person, investor, developer, entrepreneur wants to come to the city. You know, that’s my portfolio. It’s my responsibility. And they know where to go.” (LIVE) He went on to admit that the extra workload will be a challenge, so he’s asked the Cabinet Adviser to help him. (TAPE) “It’s far too much for me to do on my own, so we’ve reorganised the support that we had for the Cabinet. And we’ve put a Cabinet adviser in to help me .. And she will have .. personal responsibility for international links, business engagement and tourism” (LIVE) It means Marco is the key decision maker on growth, strategic planning, economic development and business engagement. It’s a lot. So has he taken on more than he can chew? Or do you agree with his plan to make it easier for investors by dealing with just one person? Later in the show we’ll be talking to a man who agrees with Marco’s decisions after eight o’clock. But first let’s hear from two local councillors who have very big concerns over the move, Councillor Nick Sandford Leader of Peterborough’s Liberal Democrat Group, and Councillor Nazin Khan, Leader of Peterborough’s Labour Group. Good morning gentlemen. Nick first of all, what’s your problem? It’s a one-stop shop for businesses coming to the city. Continue reading “Nick Sandford and Nazim Khan on Marco Cereste”

It quickly became caught up in the furore surrounding Peterborough City Council’s spending on consultants, an issue which has dragged on ever since, and is still dragging on, due to the resistance encountered on the part of Council to disclose the full facts. ANDY HARPER: Now along with our many other subjects, we are talking rubbish this morning, particularly the state of Peterborough’s Cathedral Square, which has been slated. Also there’s a rise of fly-tipping in the city, and that’s being blamed on the cancelling of bulk waste removal service. Well a one man campaign almost, over the years that I’ve been presenting this programme, has been waged by Roger Hughes, to try and keep Peterborough tidy. And over the years he has sent me photographs of fly-tipping, and some of the sites in the centre of Peterborough. And today is no exception. Roger, good morning to you.
ROGER HUGHES: Good morning Andy. How are you?
ANDY HARPER: I’m good thank you very much. Tell us then about the state of Cathedral Square. Lots of criticism. Continue reading “Litter, Human Nature and False Economies”
