Aston’s Back in Town

This weekend Jack Hunt School’s 40th Anniversary celebration concert began with an emotional reprise from Aston Merrygold who performed his “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables” song from Les Miserables to a select audience of friends and former teachers, a song which he first performed in the musical when he was at the School in 2004.

Before rushing off to his next appointment, the JLS frontman spoke of his love for the School and said he would always be there to help them in any way in the future.

The Nene Park Trust has been given a licence to use Ferry Meadows Country Park as a venue for up to 5000 people to see concerts plays and other events. Locals are uneasy but James McCullock Chief Executive allays their fears. When Brian Was King

Here’s a spinny article from Nick Cohen written in 1995 at the tail end of the last Conservative Government, when Brian Mawhinney was MP for Peterborough and featuring the ET headline: “Boy saves turkey from oven by buying the bird with his pocket money”. Here is one of the more timely quotes:

Flag Fen’s Francis Pryor and The Making of the British Landscape

At Holme Fen, a nature reserve just south of Peterborough, there is a slightly tired-looking, cast-iron green post. When the Victorians began to drain the nearby lake of Whittlesey Mere, the local landowner, William Wells, sank the post into the peat to measure how much the dirt shrank as it dried out. In 1848 the post’s top was the same level as the earth. Today, its summit is four metres above ground. It marks the lowest point in Britain, and is the centre piece of what is now a stunning silver-birch wood overlooking a man-made lake.
