PAUL: The World Quizzing Championships are coming to Peterborough. As well as the main quiz, there will be a crime and punishment tour, Cathedral tour, curry night, and lots more quizzes. Sounds like fun? Steven Dodding is the Peterborough Quiz Champion. I nearly called him a geek. Steven good morning.
STEVEN: Good morning Paul. How are you?
PAUL: I do apologise. We are being derogatory on purpose to people this morning, and then we’re apologising afterwards, if that’s alright.

Goldhay Arts in Crisis

Goldhay Arts the centre that supports adults with learning disabilities has learned that its finances are in deficit to the tune of forty four thousand pounds. Without some additional help it could close. Sarah Burckitt from Goldhay Arts talks to the BBC’s Andy Gall. ANDY: Eight twenty one now. Good morning. A Peterborough charity is under threat of closing down because of lack of funding. Goldhay Arts helps adults with learning disabilities with socialising and learning new skills. Bev from Peterborough has a daughter with Downs Syndrome who attends the group, and she was devastated by the news.
BEV: (TAPE) It’s my lifeline. That’s the only break I get from Emily, three days a week when she is at Goldhay. And all her friends, it’s social, she has more of a social life than I do. But at least I get a break. For those three days that she comes here I have time to myself. When you have a handicapped child it’s a twenty four seven mental thing. Shelagh Smith on Vivacity

ANDY: Andy in for Paul this morning. Plans for Peterborough’s new Culture and Leisure Trust Vivacity have been unveiled. The Trust will take over the running of Peterborough’s libraries, museums, sports facilities and the Key Theatre from the first of May. Earlier, Kevin Tighe the new Chief Executive of Vivacity explained why the change had been made.

Steve Jason on Peterborough Venues

Local promoter Steve Jason comments on the “poor relation” status of Peterborough venues, following the news that The Cresset Theatre will close. Broadcast at 08:10 on Monday 26th April 2010 in the Paul Stainton Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Peterborough.

PAUL: Now on the show this morning we have been focusing on the lack of night-life in Peterborough following the news that the Cresset Theatre is to close by the first of July, well to acts anyway. The Broadway Theatre of course closed fifteen months ago. Peterborough now just has one recognisable theatre, and that’s the Key. So will we, as a city, still be able to attract the country’s top performers? Or will entertainment and culture in Peterborough suffer from the lack of a quality venue? I suggested that to Council Leader Marco Cereste last week, that we might become the poor relation of Cambridge and Leicester and places like that, and he was quite angry about it. But that’s my opinion. Let’s find out from a man who should know. Steve Jason has been a promoter in Peterborough for many years, one of the few people in the city still putting things on. Marco Cereste on The Cresset

Marco Cereste Leader of Peterborough City Council comments on the local facilities remaining on offer in Peterborough in the leisure sector following the news that the Cresset Theatre in Bretton will close.

STAINTON: As we revealed this morning. the Cresset Theatre is to close by the end of June. The decision has been taken because of a cash crisis at the venue. The complex will remain open for weddings and conferences, but will not host concerts or gigs from July. Jonathan Martin is the Chief Executive of YMCA Cambridgeshire and Peterborough, which runs the complex. He assured ticket-holders for shows beyond June they will get their money back.
MARTIN: (TAPE) They will get their money back. And in fact it will start to happen automatically. For people who paid on debit and credit cards the money will just start appearing. We will send letters out to people saying it’s coming. For those that paid by cheque, they’ll receive a cheque in the post. The only people that need to come into the building to see us is the people that paid with cash need to bring their tickets in and we’ll give them their cash back.

PAUL: Good news if you’re a Peterborian. The Halfords Cycle Tour is coming again to Peterborough this year. You may remember the race made it’s debut last year in the city. It was a massive success. Over five thousand people turned up in the city centre to see people going whizzing around our streets, even though I oiled the corner near Woolworths. PAUL: There’s about two months to go until the Peterborough Breakfast Show wins the city’s Dragon Boat Festival twenty ten. Of course we’ll be out the front there with our flag, and somebody banging the drum. We’ve been training especially hard for the event, (Have we?), bench pressing actual dragons and paddling along the Nene. Along with the spectacle of the race, a special fly-past has been arranged with the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. They knew we were doing it, so Squadron Leader Ian Smith said: “Of course we’ll bring the planes along, if the Paul Stainton Peterborough Breakfast Show’s going to be there, we’ve got to have a fly-past.” Didn’t you, Ian?
