Roger Hutchings from the Queensgate Shopping Centre Peterborough talks to the BBC’s Andy Gall about current trading conditions, and departures and arrivals in the Centre. Broadcast at 08:21 on Tuesday 1st June 2010 in the Peterborough Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire.

ANDY: It’s eight twenty one now, and there’ll soon be another empty shop at the Queensgate Centre. The Disney Store has decided to pull out after their lease expired. Recently Faith shoe shop also left, and Roger Hutchings is the Manager of Queensgate and joins us now. Good morning Roger.
ROGER: Good morning to you.
ANDY: So why are these shops leaving?
ROGER: Well I think there’s always circumstances surrounding every event. If we take Faith shoe shops, unfortunately Queensgate like other shopping destinations throughout the country have been affected by retailers going into administration, ceasing to trade, and we have lost Faith. That’s undoubtedly the case. In terms of Disney, yes Disney is .. the unit’s becoming available to us, but I think it’s easy to concentrate on the vacancies, and certainly they’re there, but we must also .. we are currently fitting out a shop for Pandora, who are coming in to open within the next couple of months, and negotiations are quite advanced with two or three national retailers to come to Queensgate. So, yes, no-one likes to lose space, or lose retailers and create space, that’s certainly not what we are about, but there is also positive news as well as those shops that are leaving. This report compiled for Drivetime and broadcast at 17:15 on Monday 24th May 2010 in BBC Radio’s Cambridgeshire’s Drivetime programme hosted by Andy Burrows.

BURROWS: Andy Burrows in for Antonia Brickell on Drivetime here on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. And we’ll stick with our top story about the Government’s decision to announce six billion pounds worth of cuts today. And EEDA, the East of England Development Agency has found out it will be facing cuts. The agency’s mission is to improve the economy in the East of England. BBC Look East’s Waseem Mirza met Keith Brown the Regional Organiser for the Federation of Small Businesses and asked him how successful development agencies actually are. (TAPE)
BROWN: We think it’s very important that the level of business support is maintained, so that businesses as we’re coming out of recession have the help that’s available to them. Whether that support is best delivered through Regional Development Agencies or through other agencies is something we’d like to discuss, so we actually come forward with positive ways of actually helping supporting businesses.
MIRZA: Obviously there’s been much talk about this. It couldn’t have come as a huge suprise, could it?
BROWN: No, certainly not. And it’s fair to say that EEDA is not the most popular Regional Development Agency with the business community. And what we’re keen to do, and indeed is one of the reasons I’m here today, is to see how we can improve the business support that they can deliver to businesses in the county. Matthew Bullock Chief Executive of the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society talks to the BBC’s Paul Stainton about how they plan to deal with investors’ losses in the Keydata collapse. An investor Robert Hidderley is also interviewed. Broadcast at 08:10 on Friday 21st May 2010 in the Peterborough Breakfast Show on BBC Radio Peterborough.

STAINTON: This just in this morning as well. A pensioner who invested into a savings plan recommended by Norwich and Peterborough Building Society fears he will never ever see his money again. Robert Hiddereley invested over a hundred and thirty thousand pounds into a firm called Keydata who’ve now gone bust. Robert is one of thousands of people affected and he joins us now. Morning Robert.
INVESTOR: Good morning.
STAINTON: I do know of a few people who don’t want to be named who are also in a fairly similar boat to yours Robert. Just explain to us what the circumstances were and what you did.
INVESTOR: Well I had some money which I wanted to invest obviously. And this seemed a fairly good rate of interest certainly. And so I went to Norwich and Peter and spoke to one of their advisers, and I decided to do this. And it all seemed a very good straightforward solid sort of scheme.
STAINTON: So the Norwich and Peterborough where you had your money suggested you invest in this other company?
INVESTOR: Yes. This is where I wanted to put it, in this good rate of interest that was being offered.
STAINTON: And what were the first signs that perhaps it wasn’t as good as it looked?
INVESTOR: Well it was fine for about the first two years, two .. yes two years. Maybe more than that actually, two and a half years. And then the .. and mine was arranged so that I would get interest on my money paid every month. And about as I say two and a half years later it started to be a bit intermittent. To be fair, all the money came through for the best part of another twelve months, but then it suddenly stopped altogether. Continue reading “Matthew Bullock Norwich and Peterborough On Keydata”

STAINTON: Now our new Prime Minister David Cameron has selected his Cabinet. It’s time now for our local council leader to do the same. Last night Marco Cereste announced his Cabinet for the next term. But did he follow David Cameron and add any Liberal Democrats? Is it a coalition of the willing? Marco Cereste is here now. Is it Marco a coalition of the willing?
CERESTE: No
STAINTON: No. I sort of guessed it might not be. (GENERAL HILARITY IN STUDIO)
STAINTON: I built you up there and you just .. anyway.
CERESTE: Well.
STAINTON: Any changes to the people that run this city? Continue reading “Marco Cereste and Carter Jonas”

STAINTON: Now last week MP for the city Stewart Jackson criticised Opportunity Peterborough for not selling the city enough.
JACKSON: (TAPE) One of the big things that we haven’t done, and a big failure, and I have to say I lay it at the door of Opportunity Peterborough, because it’s no-one else’s fault. We have not sold Peterborough on the national stage as robustly as we should. We haven’t had ads on the sides of taxis, ads in the Financial Times, radio ads, nationally. We need to get really serious about businesses coming to this city.
STAINTON: (LIVE) Well that’s Stewart Jackson MP for Peterborough, very critical. Now a large property consultancy firm has also come out in criticism. Chris Haworth from Carter Jonas in Peterborough is on the line. Morning Chris.
HAWORTH: Good morning.
STAINTON: We had the response from Opportunity Peterborough to what Stewart had to say. They said they are selling the city. They are going round. They are placing adverts. They’re doing lots of deals behind the scenes. Why are you critical? Continue reading “Carter Jonas on Redevelopment and Council Disunity”
