Peterborough faces an £8 million budget cut, from £164 million to £156 million, 5% of its Govt. allocation. The local Labour spokesman says the figure is in fact higher, and wants a slower reduction. The local LibDem suggests a number of areas to save money.
Cambridgeshire County Council announce their budget cut at 3%. The local Labour man says it’s nearer 11% and is, in fact, just the first step towards the complete privatisation of all council services. BBC insist it’s all the fault of the Labour Party.
Police are hand-delivering 40 Xmas cards to persistent offenders to remind them of their seasonal obligations towards the community. It’s also a good excuse to knock on their doors.

Eric Pickles on Localism for Peterborough

Eric Pickles MP Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government will be launching the Government’s Localism Bill today, which aims to devolve various powers down to local level. The BBC’s Paul Stainton asks Mr Pickles exactly how that might work in Peterborough, where Neighbourhood Councils have received a less than warm welcome and bank funding for new enterprises is practically non-existent.

Another Well-Deserved Pop at the Council

Local resident Phil Pumphrey has written a tremendously entertaining letter to the Peterborough Evening Telegraph concerning their “plans” to install allotments down at the bottom of Thorpe Lea Road.
One correction is due: the allotment land in Netherton which he says is used for housing is in fact still empty despite the allotment holders being kicked out over a year ago.

A further note: it would not be worth troubling to log in and add a comment on that site as their comment system is still switched off as of 21:00 on 8th December, 36 hours now.
