It’s plans for cuts include £300,000 of staff savings, a freeze on recruitment, and reductions in support for voluntary groups. Gary Johnson’s Farewell Interview

ANDY BURROWS: It is with Peterborough United that we start this afternoon. I’m Andy Burrows, here on BBC Radio Cambridgeshire. And Gary Johnson, who left Peterborough United last night, has told BBC Radio Cambridgeshire that he was disappointed to have gone. Johnson had just nine months in charge at London Road. The Club has said he left after he and Chairman Darragh McAnthony could not see eye to eye on policy. I spoke to Johnson earlier, and he said that there were a few people he wanted to pay tribute to. John Bridge on the Co-op Depot Closure

ANDY BURROWS: Let’s return to our top story this afternoon, and it’s the grim news that 230 jobs at the Co-op distribution centre in Peterborough are under threat. The company in Ivatt Way Westwood says efforts will be made to redeploy staff. The company has sites in Huntingdon, Godmanchester, and plans for a new base in Hampshire. But the firm has said it is likely there will be redundancies. John Bridge is from the Peterborough and Camnbridgeshire Chambers of Commerce. Evening to you John.

Co-op Peterborough Depot to Close

ANDY BURROWS: We start today with some pretty grim news for staff at the Co-op distribution centre in Peterborough. 230 jobs are under threat, after the company announced its depot in Ivatt Way in Westwood will shut in the Autumn. The firm has said the move is being made after a company review. It said efforts will be made to redeploy staff. The company has sites in Huntingdon and Godmanchester, and plans for a new base in Hampshire. But it is likely there will be redundancies in Peterborough. Anna Rosier from the Organic Trade Board

ANDY HARPER: Well my New Year’s Resolution is to try and think more about the food I’m buying, and to try and buy more local produce, and to eat more healthily, rather than looking for convenience foods, things that are easier to prepare and knock out straight away, give it a bit more thought, and not buy everything at the supermarket, even though it’s easy just to pull up, do the lot, and then go home. And I must admit it’s going quite well. I went to a local butchers on Saturday, great value on a fresh chicken, great value on some offers on various bits of meat. And then went next door to a greengrocers, and so much cheaper and better than the supermarket. So things are going well. I do buy organic wherever possible, but I’n not dogmatic about organic, as long as I know where something comes from, and it’s freshly produced. But how is the organic business in this country at the moment? Well currently we are sixth in the league of organic consumption. But let’s find out if the economy has been hitting the producers, and indeed the retailers as well. I’m delighted to say we can talk to Anna Rosier from the Organic Trade Board. Councillor Reports School Place Crisis

PAUL STAINTON: All but two of Peterborough’s schools have a waiting list. Questions have been asked this morning about whether the city has enough school places to cope with the influx. Earlier Jonathan Lewis from Peterborough City Council said the system was under pressure. (TAPE)
JONATHAN LEWIS:We have waiting lists across the city. Places have filled up. We’re seeing the impact of higher birth rates and migrants moving to the city. I’m still confident we have enough places for the next year’s admissions round, and we continue to invest to build more schools and more places in the city. (LIVE)
PAUL STAINTON: The Council has already said that 2012 could be the crunch year for places. Jonathan Lewis said that more money will be spent. (TAPE)
JONATHAN LEWIS: The Budget actually identifies further capital investment. There’s a hundred and thirty five million pounds going to be spent on schools. And we will get schools, physical schools built. Maybe short-term issues with mobiles, hope there won’t be but obviously planning can take some time. But I’m confident there are schemes on the table that will give us additional capacity. (LIVE)
PAUL STAINTON: One school with a waiting list is Fulbridge Primary School in Central Ward. Their councillor is Charlie Swift. Morning Charlie.

PAUL STAINTON: It’s not so much a waiting list as a waiting toilet roll, it goes round and round this waiting list, doesn’t it?
