ANDY HARPER: Well, it is chaos on Cambridgeshire’s roads again this morning, because of this accident on the A14. And it has a massive knock-on on the lives of people across the county. When the upgrade of the road was abandoned by the Government, it was proposed to improve it using private investment, possibly even a toll road. In November, John Bridge from Cambridgeshire Chamber of Commerce, who was working on it, gave the chances of success as 50%. I wonder what they are now. John, good morning to you.

With hundreds of jobs set to go from local councils alone, we wanted to hear the stories of people who have already got through being made redundant. ANDY HARPER: We’ve been talking about HGVs and large farm vehicles driving through our villages this morning. This was sparked by the tractor crashing into a home in Wilburton yesterday. Residents in the village were not surprised. (TAPE)
RESIDENT: There’ve been times when I walked past my next-door neighbour’s house, and if I’d just stick my elbow out and a lorry had gone by, I’d have had my arm ripped off, because the pavement is no more than about 2ft wide at that point. (LIVE)
ANDY HARPER: Well there has been work going on behind the scenes to try to bring relief to some villages in the County. Owen McLaughlin from Earith is Secretary of the Heavy Commercial Vehicle Forum, which represents nine villages affected by heavy lorry use. Owen, good morning to you.

PAUL STAINTON: Fed up with the current price of petrol? Fed up with being ripped off at the pumps? Fed up with putting £60/£70 worth in your car? Fed up with seeing the price go up and up and up? Well so is our MP Stewart Jackson, so much so that he’s written to the Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne asking him to review the Conservative Party Manifesto pledge for a fuel duty stabiliser. It comes as the price of petrol is at a record high, oil is going through the roof, over $100 a barrel, and around Peterborough many stations now over £1.30 a litre. As they await the outcome of an internal report into the amount of money they spend on consultants, Peterborough City Council will welcome the news that they have won a “Creme de la Creme” Award for their procurement practices, from global communications services company WPP.
WPP are unimaginably large, the world’s biggest advertising company in revenue terms, with widespread interests in advertising, public relations, and market research.
As winners, Council will send a party down to the Ritz for a sumptuous lunch, a certificate and some media advice, in addition to the certain promise of innumerable press releases, and the distinct possibility of an ongoing executive lunch arrangement, depending on the affability of the team they send down on the day.

JEREMY SALLIS: .. a record number of Whooper swans are in the Fens. There are normally around 5,000 swans, but at the last count there were over 7,000, way above the average. Well, the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in Welney, and the RSPB, did the count, and our reporter here at BBC Radio Cambridgeshire, Sophie Suhleria, went along to the Trust in Welney as they fed the birds. JEREMY SALLIS: Over the next four years more than 50 of Cambridgeshire’s subsidised bus services could be removed. Subsidised transport costs the County Council just under £3 million to run, and provides access to the wider community, helping people to get, say, to local libraries, and to the hospital. Well earlier on in the programme we spoke to Glenn Edge, who’s the Head of Passenger Transport from Cambridgeshire County Council. (TAPE)
GLENN EDGE: They’re subsidised as social needs. We recognise they’ve grown up over time, but unfortunately we’re in a difficult position. The reality of the Comprehensive Spending Review and the financial situation the Government is in today is now coming home to roost. We’ve got reduced monies from Government. We’ve got inflationary pressures, demographic changes on the County, and therefore trying to make budget prediction over the next four years, while taking into account growth in the County, has meant that our councillors have had to make some very tough decisions. We’ve got to save, as you know, over £160 million over the next four years. (LIVE)
