ANDY GALL: After months of campaigning, it looks as though a new home could have been found for the Green Backyard. The community project has been told it will have to move away from its home near Apex House, and be given a new location. And after meetings with Peterborough City Council, the owners say one suggestion may be to move the green space onto the top of a multi-storey car park. Sophie Antonelli is from the Green Backyard, and is on the line. So what did you think of Marco’s suggestion of it being put on a multi-storey car park? ANDY GALL: More needs to be done to deal with overgrown verges in the Ortons. Residents say the shrubs are proving problematic for pedestrians and motorists alike in Orton Goldhay. Enterprise, the company responsible for keeping the undergrowth under control, say its policy is not to cut back shrubs and trees during the bird nesting season between March and September. We did ask Enterprise to speak to us this morning. Unfortunately nobody was available.

Funny Old Game

Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

ANDY GALL: Peterborough United started their new season with a bang blast night. It was a massive four nil win for the Posh against Southend United in the League Cup at home. .. And someone who can say he was there, Posh fan Nilesh Patel joins us. What about that then? What about that!
NILESH PATEL: Yes. A very encouraging performance last night. The youngsters played very well, Joe Newell at left back, Ntlhe played very well as well. Something to build on, going into Saturday’s seasonal opener.
ANDY GALL: Was there a good vibe to the place last night at London Road?
NILESH PATEL: I think there was. Yes. The performance was encouraging, which certainly lifted the crowd, and I think listening to those goals back again this morning, you can tell the third goal was something special from Joe Newell, because of the way the crowd reacted. Certainly a contender for goal of the season, early doors.
ANDY GALL: I was talking to Bob Burrows yesterday, and I said, prediction for the season. I know it’s a little tough, but where in the table do you think you’d see Peterborough United? And he said, well if we don’t get relegated this season (LAUGHS) then it will bode well for the future. What do you think?
NILESH PATEL: It’s going to be another very tough season. You look at our gates. The average gates over the course of the season are probably going to be one of the worse in the Division. We haven’t got the finances the other big boys have, The Birminghams of this world, and the Cardiffs, in the Championship. But we’ll fight, and the fans will certainly get behind the team. Leicester away, we’ll take over 1,000 fans there. We’ve got Milwall at home next Tuesday, which, even though it’s the first (Championship) game of the season at home, it’s just one of those games you’ve got to win. It’s a team that’s going to be in and around us at the bottom. They’re not one of the big boys in this Division. And Leeds as well, on the following Saturday. That’s just in the opening week.
ANDY GALL: Just briefly Nilesh, I just wanted to ask you with regard to gates, and you saying Peterborough’s gates could be some of the lowest of this season coming. Are you critical, or do you see hope in the way that the football club is trying to engage with the community?
NILESH PATEL: I certainly do have hope. The Club are doing their utmost to draw fans in. I just think it’s a bit of apathy that’s set in, into the city maybe, and and into the fans as well. But they’ll be back. We had 7,000 against Manchester United, albeit a third team that was there. So there are fans out there, and they will come out. If we start the season well, I can see gates building, and the four, five, six, seven, eight thousands that will be there, the hard core, they’ll certainly get behind the team. And it will work together hopefully, with the fans and the players will bounce off each other, and that will attract more fans.
ANDY GALL: Let’s hope so.

Matthew Lee Selects £75 Million Incinerator

ANDY GALL: A multi-million pound energy from waste facility for Peterborough is now a step closer. Peterborough City Council has named waste management company Viridor as its preferred bidder. The Council says that 50 tons of black bin waste is being sent to landfill, and the new plant will burn the rubbish, reducing the amount sent to landfill. Richard Olive is from Friends of the Earth in Peterborough, and Fiona Radic is from the Green Party, and we can speak to them now. So first of all, to Richard, what do you think of the plans that have been put forward?
RICHARD OLIVE: It’s diabolical. Continue reading “Matthew Lee Selects £75 Million Incinerator”

Games a Massive Distraction

CHRIS MANN: Well it’s official. London 2012 has made us a more positive nation. Research released by a conversation tracking word-of-mouth expert company reveals that during the first week of the Games, discussions about crime, energy costs and economic woes dramatically decreased, because everyone was talking about just one thing, the Games. Steve Thompson is MD of that company. It’s called Keller Fay UK, and apparently they can track everyday conversations across the UK. A bit worrying Steve. How do you do that? Cambs Police Commissioner Video

CHRIS MANN: Cambridgeshire Police Authority have made a special video on YouTube to mark 100 days to go until the election for Cambridgeshire and Peterborough’s first Police and Crime Commissioner. In November people will be able to choose who they will hold to account .. for the services provided. Ruth Rogers is the Chair of Cambridgeshire Police Authority. So. You’re trying to get people interested in something that frankly up to now they’ve shown little interest in.
RUTH ROGERS: Yes. This is a completely new election of course. It’s not something that any of us will have voted for before.
CHRIS MANN: Or asked for even.
RUTH ROGERS: The Government was very keen. They were absolutely certain that there was lots of support for this idea that people wanted to have somebody that they could hold to account through the ballot box. So that’s the purpose of this, that people will be able to hold this person to account by electing them, or not electing them in years to come, if they feel that they haven’t performed properly.
CHRIS MANN: They really have handed you a bit of a dud here Ruth. They say it’s going to be a popular idea. Now you’ve got to get people interested in it. I don’t sense a huge clamour out there for people to have yet another election for yet another public servant to be paid .. how much is it? Continue reading “Cambs Police Commissioner Video”

Plenty of people just getting into the spirit and the atmosphere, and it’s absolutely fantastic.
We heard the women in the introduction doing a fantastic job.
They’re basically just trying to introduce people to the Park in the friendliest way possible and that’s fantastic.
We hoped she might get a gold, but a bronze, still fantastic.
Getting a gold medal which is quite fantastic.
Grabbed two people in fantastic fancy dress.
The organisation has been brilliant, absolutely fantastic.
Everyone loves doing it as well, so it’s been fantastic.
Fantastic! Who’s playing?
How was that? It was fantastic.
Fantastic! Well I’ll let you get on.
We’ve got this lovely red orbit to our right as well that everyone can see in the background of the BBC studios, so it’s just fantastic. Fantastic.

(That’s enough of that. Ed.)
