PETER SWAN: The most direct effect of 9/11 has been, for many of us, on the way we fly. Air Marshals and liquid bans are just two of the ways in which the airline industry has worked to combat the threat of terrorism. Well let’s speak with Julian Bray, an aviation expert from Peterborough. Evening to you Julian. Now I suppose, looking at things in a broader sense, it was the fact that September 11th was suicide attacks that was really a bit of a game-changer for the aviation industry. You think that’s fair? Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PAUL STAINTON: Plans to redevelop the Moy’s End of the London Road football stadium were approved this week, despite a number of councillors asking for the decision to be delayed. Residents had voiced concerns about the potential pollution that could be created by that big chimney that will be installed on the ground. But councillors voted in favour of the plans by 6 votes to 4. Councillor Nigel North chaired the meeting, and voted in favour. He joins us now. Morning Nigel.
NIGEL NORTH: Good morning.
PAUL STAINTON: So you dismissed all these concerns, and thought, well, we’ll go ahead anyway. Continue reading “Fletton Furnace Will Emit Nitrogen Dioxide”

Peterborough Breakfast Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

PAUL STAINTON: A year ago, we exclusively revealed on this show that Peterborough City Council wanted to adopt the slogan “Home of Environment Capital”. But have they managed it? How far have they managed to push the green agenda for the city? Well our reporter Kerry Devine has been out and about in the city, looking for signs that Peterborough is the home of environment capital. Cambridge Travel Debate

ANDY HARPER: Let’s just talk about an issue that was raised this morning on our Cambridgeshire Breakfast Show. It was all about how people get to work across Cambridgeshire, and the debate over the Guided Bus. Because the Guided Bus is now a month into full service. After Cambridgeshire Breakfast, Andy Harper was joined in the studio by a panel of local people with a knowledge of Cambridgeshire’s transport issues, to discuss what needs to be done now, and in the future, so the county can cope with further growth on our roads, and avoid gridlock. Mark Rix, who runs a cleaning company and has to drive around Cambridge every day, feels the Guided Bus has made a bit of a difference, but wants more to be done to ease congestion. (TAPE) Continue reading “Cambridge Travel Debate”

ANDY BURROWS
: There’s several reports in the papers today about how spiders are invading our homes. You know how big they are. A colleague of mine was telling us that she’d never seen a spider so big in her house today. Matt Shardlow is from the Peterborough charity Buglife. Hello to you Matt.
MATT SHARDLOW: Hi there. How are you doing?
ANDY BURROWS: They’re all coming out to play, are they? Continue reading “The House Spider”

David Aldridge on the BioBullet for Zebra Mussels

10:36 Tuesday 6th September
Mid-Morning Show
BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

ANDY HARPER: An invasive species is wreaking havoc along Cambridgeshire’s waterways. But it could soon be on the way out. The zebra mussel costs Anglian Water hundreds of thousands of pounds in repairs by clogging pipes. But now a Cambridgeshire company has developed a pellet known as a toxic malteser to deal with it. Dr David Aldridge is from BioBullets. David, good morning to you.
DAVID ALDRIDGE: Good morning Andy.
ANDY HARPER: So what are the problems caused by these things? And presumably it’s not just the zebra mussel. Continue reading “David Aldridge on the BioBullet for Zebra Mussels”

Mike Aitken on Being Lucky

17:53 Monday 5th September 2011
Drive BBC Radio Cambridgeshire

ANDY BURROWS: The new ITV show Red or Black was watched by millions over the weekend. 1000 people keep betting on either red or black, until there is only one person left. Then that person has a chance to win £1 million, simply by choosing red or black on a giant roulette wheel. Two nights in, and two fellows have done it so far. And it’s certainly prompted some debate in our house, because of the number of people who were quite close to winning who would then go on to say, actually, I’m not a very lucky person. Are people who think they are lucky generally more successful in life? I put this to Dr Mike Aitkin earlier on today. He’s from the Department of Experimental Psychology at the University of Cambridge. Continue reading “Mike Aitken on Being Lucky”

ANDY BURROWS: Travellers who are due to be evicted from the biggest illegal site in the UK say they won’t go but will negotiate. The deadline to leave the land at Dale Farm in Essex, where hundreds live without planning permission, has passed. Bailiffs can now remove them. Earlier on I spoke to  the BBC’s Richard Martin outside Dale Farm. Continue reading “Dale Farm Report”
