PAUL STAINTON: Now all this morning we’ve been doing our bit to save money. Because the Green Party think the World War Two generation could help us tackle climate change and save us a few quid as well. Later on they’re going to launch a nationwide search for the best ideas from the home front, to help us make us more energy efficient, and save cash, be less wasteful and all that. Thank you for all the suggestions for saving money this morning. Some of my favourite ones, “save wear and tear on busy city roads by closing them all to traffic.” It’s going to work, isn’t it? It’s going to work. And I particularly like “stay at home as much as you can, save petrol, and make the most of your TV licence.” Plus: “Stop the car five miles from home and push it the rest of the way.” That’s always going to be a petrol-saving option. But they want us to go back to the Second World War and think about cutting squares of toilet paper up instead of toilet roll, eating unpopular meat, or even plugging a hole in your shoe with some cardboard. A non-story about cyclists in Cowgate turns into a rant against cyclists, motorists and traffic in general. A well-meaning spokesman for Peterborough City Council says of course they care, but what can you do except encourage road users to be nice to each other. When will that be, say the bells of Stepney?

Pensioners Must Pay More for Allotments

As part of their programme of cuts, Peterborough City Council is ending its discount for pensioners who cultivate an allotment. A senior councillor questions the integrity of this policy, and asks how it fits with the Council’s stated aim to become Home of Environment Capital. And the councillor suspects that Peterborough Council may have a darker motive.

Many local environmental groups are pinning their hopes on access to the funding promised by Government through the Green Investment Bank. Details are still sketchy at this time.
There will be a protest at lunchtime today in Laxton Square against the cuts to public services. Unite union estimates 1500 public service jobs could go in Peterborough, one third of the workforce.
Peterborough City Council is looking at the idea of reviving the sightseeing bus. Early indications are that the route could lead out of Peterborough and towards Barnack and Stamford.
