CHRIS MANN: Employers in Cambridge are being encouraged to pay their staff at least £7.20 an hour, after the City Council voted to bring in what’s called The Living Wage. Councillors unanimously agreed to implement the higher rate, rather than the statutory National Minimum Wage, which is £6.19. .. Liz Brennan of the Unison union in Cambridge gave her reaction to the City Council decision. Continue reading “The Living Wage In Cambridge”

PAUL STAINTON: A former prisoner says Government plans to extend a scheme trialled and tested in Peterborough won’t stop people reoffending. Last week David Cameron said he wanted to increase the number of private firms and charities involved in rehabilitating criminals. The Prime Minister said he wanted payment by results, and those contracts to become the norm by 2015. The scheme was first  two years ago. And last week David Cameron expressed his feelings towards the scheme, and made this announcement. (TAPE)
DAVID CAMERON: It’s such a good idea I want to put rocket boosters under it, and indeed today I have an announcement to make. By the end of 2015, I want to see payment by results spread right across rehabilitation. Now of course there’ll be some high-risk offenders for whom this is not appropriate. But this approach should be the norm rather than the exception.” (LIVE)
PAUL STAINTON: Well that’s what David Cameron had to say. Let’s speak to Juliet Lyon. She’s Director of the Prison Reform Trust. So this is the way to go then? Continue reading “Private Probation Rolling Out Payment By Results”

Back For More At London Road

CHRIS MANN: Darren Ferguson has confirmed that Posh have held talks with a young striker about joining the Club in the summer. However Fergie insists the player is yet to put pen to paper with the Club. Posh beat Huddersfield on Tuesday, before jumping another place in the League, thanks to Blackburn’s win over Sheffield Wednesday last night. So ahead of the weekend clash with Derby, Fergie is in confident mood. (TAPE)
DARREN FERGUSON: The win on Tuesday lifted us above Ipswich, and then Blackburn beating Sheffield Wednesday, on goal difference we go above them. So it looks better than being at the bottom. There’s no doubt about that. But if we can back it up on Saturday and get another victory, then we could possibly be out of the bottom three.
NICK FAIRBAIRN: Is it pychologically important as well, jumping a couple of places? Continue reading “Back For More At London Road”

The Reality Of Northstowe

PAUL STAINTON: The first phase of the biggest new town in Britain since Milton Keynes was approved yesterday, but residents are not happy. South Cambridgeshire District Council approved the first 1,500 of 10,000 proposed new homes for the Northstowe development, just north west of Cambridge yesterday. Eight parish councils around that site put forward their objections. Geoff Twiss is from Over Parish Council. He was one of the people unhappy.(TAPE)
GEOFF TWISS: Unhappy, resigned. I think people know which way the wind is blowing. But there was a lot of concern from local residents, and particularly from the local parish councils. So yes, people really were bothered on all sorts of grounds. (LIVE)
PAUL STAINTON: Well we’ve been to the villages around the area who are concerned. Our reporter Dotty McLeod is now in Longstanton for us, which will also be affected. Continue reading “The Reality Of Northstowe”

PAUL STAINTON: It can be a bit tricky, can’t it. You go round one supermarket you’ve got a traffic light system on your food. You go round another, there’s a different system of telling you whether it’s healthy or not. Well, from next year good news, Tony Bonsignore. Good news! Continue reading “Eat Your Greens”

Queen Edith’s Ward

ANDY HARPER: On the line is Geoff Heathcock. Geoff is the Liberal Democrat county councillor for Queen Edith ward in Cambridge. Or is it? Because under the boundary changes it would now be in the newly redrawn South East Cambridgeshire constituency, along with Soham and Fordham. I’ve looked at this map Geoff, and I seriously just wonder if somebody just got a felt-tip pen and went round, and then thought, ooh, Queen Edith. We’ll go round that bit as well.
GEOFF HEATHCOCK: Well yes it’s one conclusion. I’ve made the observation that I think this is utterly and completely nonsensical. We have been shunted around now for some years. When we came out of the Cambridgeshire constituency, many years ago, when they were looking to create a seventh seat in the county, because (of) the population, we were then called South West Cambridgeshire, which stretched the other side of St Neots to the Bedfordshire border and all the way round. Then we were played with again on the last shunt, when they decided that they would bring Trumpington, if you like, in from the cold so to speak, and put them back in the city. And we are the forgotten ward of the city. Continue reading “Queen Edith’s Ward”

Posh Need Points At London Road

CHRIS MANN: Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson says he may make one or two changes to his team for the match against Huddersfield. The Posh lost 0-1 at Watford on Saturday, but have an immediate chance to bounce back when the Terriers come to London Road tomorrow evening. One change that may be forced upon Fergie is replacing Tommy Rowe, who was subbed off at half-time against Watford with an ankle injury. (TAPE)
DARREN FERGUSON: Well he’s been in early this morning. It’s fifty fifty. He won’t train today. It will be a last minute thing, but we’ll know more tomorrow.
SAM EDWARDS: That’s quite a trick, isn’t it? Because he’s such a lynch-pin of that new formation, being at wing-back. Does that play on your mind with a change of shape then? Continue reading “Posh Need Points At London Road”

Peterborough Riverside Opportunity Area

NICK FAIRBAIRN: A massive redevelopment in Peterborough has come a step closer. The City Council says it’s ready to find a business partner to redevelop the city’s South Bank. Good news, although given that the final bill could be around £1 billion, you’d think they could have come up with a snappier name than the Riverside Opportunity Area. Well earlier I spoke to Andrew Edwards, who’s Head of Growth and Regeneration at Peterborough City Council, and I started by asking him what the redeveloped area could look like.
